Our Story

The Phoenix Theatre is the only theatre in the Puget Sound region exclusively dedicated to producing compelling scripted comedy theatre that enriches the cultural lives of the greater Edmonds and Snohomish County community. Our goal is to entertain, inspire, and enrich our audiences lives by using humor to illuminate our common humanity.

Eleven years ago Melanie Calderwood and her business partner Debbie Palomera created the Phoenix Theatre out of the ashes of the Edge of the World Theatre.

Today we foster an appreciation for the performing arts and the personal growth of individuals by providing high-quality classes, interactive workshops, internships, and community service opportunities The Phoenix Theatre is a vital member of the entire local arts community and is recognized regionally and nationally for providing meaningful experiences through live comedy theatre.

Giving back
Picture
The Phoenix is proud to give back through our Laughter is the Best Medicine Initiative. It's not just a saying-- it's science-fact that there are measurable physiological benefits to laughter. Our Artistic Director Melanie, a nurse navigator who's spent a lifetime working with cancer patients, is a trained Laughologist! She learned through her training at Evergreen Health Center that laughter has a serious positive affect on the body and mind of a person going through cancer treatment and recovery.
We offer free tickets through this program to allow cancer patients and survivors to come to see any show during the season and bring a friend. There is no qualifying paperwork to fill out, just call or write us an email and mention the program and when you or your friend wants to come and it will be comped.
While supplies are limited, we still have plenty of seats to give away to deserving folks who could use a laugh.

FREE LAB SPACE for Queer, Nonbinary, and BIPOC Artists of the PNW
Free Lab Space is available at the Phoenix to Queer and Non-Binary and Black, Indigenous, and Artists of Color since 2018. If you need space to write, dance, rehearse, create, or something else please let us know! The space is our auditorium and lobby as needed. There are restrooms available. We reserve our space for free use to artists in historically under served communities of any artistic discipline, we just need to put you on the calendar. No forms to fill out, no hoops to jump through.
We ask that you use up to 3 hours per week. If you need more time than that we are happy to negotiate reduced-price rentals for your needs above and beyond the 3 hours each week.  If you are developing a show and want to perform it at the Phoenix we offer reduced-price rentals for the occasion.
